Sega’s House Of The Dead Scarlet Dawn Arriving At Dave & Busters Locations Now

Back in July, we reported that the major FEC chain Dave & Busters had purchased Sega’s House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn for all of their locations. While Sega stressed that this was not an exclusive release, D&B was the first to buy, thus they are the first to be served. Exact dates are never provided for arcade releases, but the news did mention that Sega was aiming to have the first-run units delivered before Halloweeen. The game will officially be introduced to the industry at IAAPA 2018 next month.

UPDATE: Related to the development of Scarlet Dawn, it has been revealed that a company called Agni Flare is responsible for creating the look of the game, while the PC-based platform Sega is using to power the game is codenamed “ALLS” (i.e. the Sega ALLS platform).  Here’s a slideshow of different Scarlet Dawn images, including concept art, characters and direct screens that I hadn’t seen before. UPDATE #2: Apparently the images I had received are the property of a site called “CG World” and Sega asked me to remove them. Apologies about that. I found the CG World site where those images are at, just click here to see what that was all about. In their place, I’ve put in screenshots that are currently found on the official House of the Dead site.

ORIGINAL STORY: Today, we have a few reports of readers seeing the game at different locations around the country. I first saw it with a video posted to the Irving, CA D&B, and since then the reports of locations have continued to come in. One of those comes from Alex N. at the “Palisades on West Nyack, NY.” Our thanks to Alex for providing these pictures below.

House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn in New York

Inside of the cabinet. I hadn’t seen the “Please sit in this position” skeleton stickers before, nice little touch. From what I’ve seen of the Japanese version, the control panel has more red in it, while the US version looks more blue (including the triggers on the guns).

Alex mentions that you pick your weapons at the beginning, and can also select if you want to go through the whole story, or through specific chapters.

I’ll be covering this one at IAAPA from the appearance there. If you have had a chance to play it already, what did you think?

Marvel Contest Of Champions Coming Soon To Dave & Busters

UPDATE(2/14): This game has been officially unveiled. Click here for more details.

In recent times, Dave & Busters has been at the forefront of introducing new games to the industry. They tend to do so at the beginning of the year; last year was when we saw Tomb Raider Arcade land in Dave & Busters around this same time, and we’ve covered the many other instances of D&B launching a title as a timed exclusive.

Thanks to a photo posted on Reddit, we now have an idea of what is coming to Dave & Busters next, but we don’t know much more than that as Dave & Busters does not comment on titles that have not been officially announced. There is no information on where this image came from either, but it does look legitimate. Here’s the photo then a tiny bit more information:

While we have no idea what this will entail, who is making it, how soon it will appear, etc., there is a mobile (iOS/Android) app of the same name that you can download right now. This promo has a focus on Captain Marvel however, so perhaps she’ll be headlining it. As it is a comic book fighter, everyone will assume that this could be just like Injustice, but without confirmation or details, all we can do is wait and see.

Until then, here’s a trailer of the mobile version that highlights some of that version’s features:

What do you think or hope for this one?

Location Watch: Miniboss, The Paradox Arcade+Bar; Bowlero (CA); Pixels & Pints (CAN) & More

Today’s Location Watch post is strongly focused on new locations in California, but we have a couple of others to talk about. Let’s get into it:

Miniboss (San Jose, CA)

Thanks to Michael L. for the tip/info/pics on this location, as well as tips on the next two entries.

We’ll start with this new bar/arcade that has opened up in Silicon Valley, and just so happens to be within walking distance of the FoxNext game development studio in San Jose. It is mainly focused on classics, the games list covers 32 video games and 8 pins, including: AC/DC (premium); Area 51/ Max Force combo; Attack from Mars LE (remake); Deadpool (premium); Donkey Kong; House of Dead 2; Initial D 4 (2x linked cabinets); Killer Queen; Medieval Madness (remake); Ms. Pac-Man; NARC; NBA Jam; Neo Geo 4 slot (Metal Slug 5, Bust-A-Move, Super Side Kicks The Next Glory, Samurai Shodown III); Star Wars (Stern); Punch Out; Raiden II; Street Fighter II: CE; Sunset Riders;  Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo; Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles In Time; Terminator 2: Judgement Day; The Simpsons; Theatre of Magic; TRON (video game); Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3; Whitewater; X-men vs Street Fighter. Here’s a slide show of pics from the location; you can find them online, here.

The Paradox Arcade+Bar (Pomona, CA)

Also in bar/arcade growth is The Paradox Arcade+Bar in Pomona. This sounds somewhat similar to Miniboss above, where they offer a little over a couple of dozen classics in one location, although they also have some classic consoles setup to play (the PSX and N64 and an unspecified Atari console, probably the 2600). For some of the games you can expect to find there: Asteroids Deluxe; Attack From Mars pinball; Galaga; Magic Sword; Space Invaders; The Addams Family pinball; The Champion Pub pinball; The House of the Dead; The Simpsons and several more. You can see more of it from this cool promo video; their main website is here.

Bowlero (Pasadena, CA)

Opening their 16th Bowlero in California, the Pasedena location is now open, although we don't have quite as much info on the game selection as we do on the previous locations. From this story at the San Gabriel Valley Tribune, visitors can "enjoy popular titles like Jurassic Park Arcade, Mario Kart [Arcade GP DX], World's Largest Pac-Man, classic pinball machines, and many more. Load up your arcade card with credits, grab the controls, and have a blast!" Overall, sounds like a modern FEC that has pinball.

Pixels And Pints Game Lounge [Toronto, Canada]

Moving on from California is a bar/arcade up North in Toronto by the name of Pixels And Pints. From this article at Blogto, it sounds like a smaller, Canadian version of The Paradox Arcade+Bar (I don't think that poutine is on The Paradox's menu :P). They've got an N64 setup to play, but plenty of retro arcade goodness including: Big Buck Hunter (the original from the early 00's); a pair of Cruis'n USA's; Mortal Kombat; Operation Wolf; Smash TV; Starship 1; Street Fighter II CE; Super Monaco GP; The House of the Dead; and a few others. Find them on Facebook here.

Texas Gamers Lounge Austin Coming To Austin, TX

I came across this one on Facebook, a retro-focused arcade that is "opening soon." It sounds like the standard retrocade model of charging a fee to enter, then everything is on free play; they'll have unlimited "classic, retro, & modern gaming" along with tournaments, streaming and parties. I don't see a games list at this point, so we'll just have to wait and see.

Emporium Arcade Bar Opening Soon in Oakland, CA

You might recall a story about a bar/arcade opening in San Francisco some time ago by the name of Emporium; they had to go through a long, tedious process to open, but finally did in September 2017.  Now they are in the process of opening another location in Oakland, which is "attached to Oakland's Fox Theater." There is an Instagram account setup for them here, where you can see some pics of the games that will be on hand, including Burgertime, Galaga, Ice Cold Beer, Joust, Killer Queen Arcade, Metallica pinball, Robotron 2084, Skeeball, Spider-man pinball; WWF WrestleMania and more.

Round 1 USA Opens In Greendale, WI

Dave & Busters Opens In Louisville, KY

That's all for this time - if you find yourself near any one of these locations, be sure to go and support them! If you know of an arcade that has opened recently that we haven't covered, or is opening soon, be sure to let us know so we can highlight it.

Dave & Busters Officially Unveils Marvel: Contest Of Champions Arcade

We recently heard about a new game that was on it’s way to Dave & Busters arcade locations around the country, a 1v1 fighting game with a big license by the name of Marvel: Contest of Champions. Today, we have some media and details to share with you about this card vending video game as it officially launches at the chain’s 122 North American locations.

As mentioned in the first story about this, Contest of Champions has existed as a mobile game since 2013, but the arcade version looks to stand above that thanks to the arcade cabinet and card vending features. Let’s start with the game cabinet, then go from there:

Marvel: Contest of Champions by Kabam, Raw Thrills and Dave & Busters

As you can see from that image, the game cabinet is similar to what Raw Thrills used with Injustice Arcade, with some notable differences. First off, you’ve got joysticks, something that was not used in Injustice. This gives the game a different dynamic on how it plays, and gives us a “proper” 1v1 fighting game that fans of that genre look for. While it has four action buttons per player, with two large buttons next to the card readers. Here is a very brief teaser trailer:

Per the press release below, a company by the name of Kabam is involved with the software. The game has been re-balanced for arcade play and to offer a 2p local mode, but beyond that you’ll have to go and play it to see how it works.

UPDATE: I received more information on the production of this game and what that means regarding the sales status. You might recall that there are certain games that have been Dave & Busters exclusives such as Spider-Man Homecoming, Star Trek card/coin pusher, and Rock ‘Em, Sock ‘Em Robots. Marvel: Contest of Champions falls under the same category, with D&B serving as the publisher of the title – they came up with the idea for the concept and have been funding it through the various development stages, using partners in the industry to bring it to fruition. Fortunately if you are in North America, there are 122 locations that will have it (and presumably any new D&B locations that open in the near future), so it won’t be impossible to find.

Over 70 collectible & unique cards can be obtained from the machine, with more to come down the road. Here are some renders of the fronts & backs of a few of those cards:

Wolverine Contest of Champions card

Groot card, Marvel Contest of Champions ArcadeSpider-man Classic, Marvel: Contest of Champions Arcade card

Then we have the press release itself; before that, what do you think about this game? I’m curious to hear expectations, as Injustice by all reports has done quite well on earnings, despite being very casual from a gameplay perspective.

Hello valiant readers, and welcome to another edition of Newsbytes. If you’re new to the site, Newsbytes are posted every Saturday and feature a variety of quick news items from the wonderful world of arcades. Let’s get to it:

Samurai Spirits Confirmed For Japanese Arcade Release

When SNK announced the reboot of their Samurai Shodown/Spirits series last year, they mentioned that it would be coming out on every major gaming platform, as well as in arcades. Details were sparse beyond that, and some confusion came up when a recent trailer made no mention of arcades at all. Fortunately that has been laid to rest this week, as SNK has confirmed that the game will be made available through Taito’s digital distribution network, NESiCAxLIVe 2.

According to Taito’s page with the announcement, the arcade version will allow for cross site play, but it doesn’t mention if there are any other differences. I imagine it will be the same as the console models. While the console versions launch on the 26th of June, the AC version is only saying “Summer” at the moment.

What does that mean for a Western release? Well, Round1USA did test NESiCAxLIVe 2 at a few locations in January, although after the test ended, we’ve not heard anything else about that. It could mean that more development time is needed to get things right for what the market needs here, or it could be that the test was a flop and they didn’t see a reason to move forward. If the network does become available through Round 1, then at least that means that we’ll see the game in arcades for the States, but then that would be an R1USA exclusive – a limited release. We’ll wait…and see.

Oh, and since we’re on the subject of games we probably won’t see here, Sega has announced that Puyo Puyo eSports Arcade is launching in Japan on April 18th.

Star Trek: Dark Remnant Comes To Dave & Busters

Building upon the VR motion platform that was launched with the Jurassic World VR Expedition, all Dave & Busters now have an exclusive Star Trek experience by the name of Star Trek Dark Remnant. Taking place in what is known among Trekkies as the “Kelvin Timeline” (the universe of Star Trek as presented in the most recent JJ Abrams films and not the TV shows or older movies), up to four players work together to protect the starship Enterprise from the Klingons. You can read more about it here; it was created by VRStudios, which was also responsible for the 2nd game that D&B had offered on their VR platform, Dragonfrost.

This also marks the second exclusive Star Trek game the chain can boast about, the other being the coin+card pusher that they funded a few years ago.

AAMA Awards At Amusement Expo

I wondered if I should save this for one more Amusement Expo post, although we already got the new-new video products out of the way about the event. One other item of interest are the AAMA Awards, where the American Amusement Machine Association presented a few awards to companies in our industry to recognize excellence in those particular categories. I arrived at the Expo right as they were finishing up those awards, so I didn’t snap any pics or video of that ceremony, although later in the day they did host a President’s Reception where they recognized Xtreme Action Park as FEC of the Year. The Facebook post below mentions and links to the winners – congrats!

ICE Uploads Three Videos

If you like professionally-made, factory produced arcade equipment videos, then ICE is back with three new videos about their games. In addition to Super Kixx Pro below, you can also catch Whack-A-Clown and Tons of Tickets by clicking on the hyperlinks. One other item of note about Super Kixx Pro is that the game has begun testing in Japan today at a Round One location in Kanagawa; it will be testing there (under the Bandai Namco Technica name) through the 17th.

Project Armor Becomes Strike Blazinger

We’ve been talking about many different indie arcade games lately, so it’s nice to get an update on one of them that we haven’t heard about in a while. In this instance we have a game that had gone through a couple of name changes already; it started as Strike Harbinger, then changed to Project Armor and now it’s Strike Blazinger. You can see some new footage of the game at the beginning of Chris Tang’s GDC 2019 presentation about the Tetris World Championship. It’s kind of small, but we can see that they’ve packed quite a bit of action into the game while maintaining a smooth & fast frame rate. We’ll continue keeping an eye on this one for when it does launch, either this year or next.

The BitGeek Podcast Shines a Light On Cosmotrons

Speaking of indie games, the BitGeek podcast gave some love to another game we’ve often spoke about on here by the name of Cosmotrons. If you want to learn more about how this game came into being, along with other fun and fascinating tidbits, then check it out:

Pinball Pianola – The Piano Pinball Machine

There have been a lot of weird pinball related items I’ve seen over the years and this might be the strangest & most unique of them all. Designed as “interactive art,” it’s capable of making a wide variety of sounds thanks to the user controlled soundboard on the left, and the real piano strings in the back that serve as targets. Some of those sounds are nice, while others are more of the headache-inducing variety. I guess part of the fun is figuring it all out. One nice touch are the lines of music which serve as pinball shot guides on the playfield surface. You can read more about this project here.

Thieves Steal Arcade Games From A Collection, Attempt To Sell Them Back To The Victim

Here’s an oddity – back in the day, I recall there being a show on TV called America’s Dumbest Criminals. If it were still around, this pair would certainly make the cut. Well, I should say allegedly, as they have not been convicted yet.

As the allegations go, Perry Don Ingle and his alleged accomplice Candi Bailey, broke into the classic game room collection of one John Loftis, made off with a few of his cabinets, then contacted him soon afterwards wanting to sell them back to him. Mr. Loftis played along, then contacted the police, where a sting operation was able to apprehend the alleged crooks and bring the games back home. While we’re all happy to hear that the games were found and returned to their rightful owner, one can’t help but pull off a major facepalm at the stupidity of the crooks here.

That’s all I’ve got for now; have a great weekend and be sure to go out to an arcade and play!

I’ll keep on saying this until it somehow gets stuck into the public’s consciousness, but the amusement industry is on fire right now. Dozens of locations continue to open their doors out there, and there are new games aplenty to satisfy those venues.

H/T to Replay Magazine for highlighting many of these in their news coverage (Manianc’s Mansion, Quarters Bar+Arcade, Pixels Arcade,). Let’s get to it, as quite a few new locations have opened up to cover here:

Maniac’s Mansion (Witchita Falls, TX)

Having opened two weeks ago on the 29th of March, Maniac’s Mansion follows the standard retro arcade business model (mainly classic titles with everything on free play, just pay the admission fee) with one important exception – it’s also a cereal bar. I suppose that would make it the only “cerealcade” I know of. For their game selection, they have: Centipede, Crisis Zone, DDR Supernova, Mario Bros., Space Invaders, Super Zaxxon and many more, although that’s all I could glean from a few of the photos. You can find them on Facebook, here.

Maniac's Mansion in Texas

Quarters Bar+Arcade (Longmont, CO)

With a Quarters Arcade Bar having opened up not long ago in Salt Lake City, I thought that this might be the same company at first, but the About page indicates that this is being run by Colorado locals. Bringing a bar/arcade concept to the Longmont area, they opened back in February. While it is called Quarters, you won’t need them as they use a wrist band system, following a similar games-on-free-play model that most bar/arcades use. They currently have 16 games, including: Area 51: Site 4, Big Buck Safari, Centipede, Donkey Kong, Frogger, Mortal Kombat 4, Pac-Man Battle Royale, Pac-Man’s Pixel Bash, Raiden II, Skee Ball and more. Find them on Facebook here.

Quarters Arcade+Bar in Longmont, CO

Apex Entertainment Center (Syracuse, NY)

Located inside of the Destiny “Luxury Shopping Complex” is the second location for Apex, an FEC offering everything from arcades to VR. For their arcade they have a modern line-up of amusement and redemption titles, their games page mentioning “60+ games” and video titles such as Aliens Armageddon, Batman, Super Mario Bros. and Transformers. I don’t know if the SMB is an old Nintendo VS. cab or not, however.

https://twitter.com/TeamICEGame/status/1109157343076499456

Play Money Pinball (Stuart, FL)

H/T to The Arcade Hunters for this one. Opening on February 27th, Play Money Pinball is primarily focused on the silverball, but they have some other amusements to play for a flat rate too. On the pinball side they’ve got: Arena, F-14 Tomcat, Frank Thomas’ Big Hurt, Gorgar, Johnny Mnemonic, Jokerz, Millionaire, NASCAR, NBA Fastbreak, No Fear, Stargate, Star Wars Episode I, Terminator 2: Judgment Day, Volcano and more; it’s quite the interesting mix of older games that they have on hand. While their video game selection isn’t quite as extensive (which makes sense, given they have pinball in their store name), they have TMNT (1989), The Simpsons, Trophy Hunter, and a multicade cabinet. Find them on Facebook or check out their main website.

Play Money Pinball, Stuart, FL

Pixels Arcade & Sports Bar (Oshkosh, WI)

For those looking to get their retro game on in Oshkosh, along with some drinks, then the Pixels Arcade & Sports Bar is for you. They have some dartboards & pool tables among a few retro games that includes: Arkanoid, Crazy Taxi, Dig Dug, Donkey Kong, Double Dragon, Frogger, Hydro Thunder, Madden Football, Ms. Pac-Man, NBA Jam, Pac-Man, Point Blank 2, Punch Out, Soul Calibur, Space Invaders Deluxe, The Simpsons, Vanguard, and more. Find them on Facebook here.

Pixels Arcade & Sports Bar in Oshkosh, WI

1up Arcade & Pub on Tap (Plattsburgh, NY)

Another via Replay, this is one that I do not believe has opened their doors yet, but they are in the process of getting there soon. By this article, they’ll be filling in the 1500 sq. ft. space with some classic gaming goodness, so stay tuned if you’re in the area.

White Rose at Bridgewater (York, PA)

Here’s a case of a long existing business that is adding an arcade to their entertainment mix – along with a 9-hole golf course. Most of the renovation efforts have focused on the golf course and other amenities, but at least they recognize the value of having arcade machines on hand. They will have “30+ games” on hand, which include new titles like Cruis’n Blast, Halo: Fireteam Raven, Jurassic Park, Mario Kart Arcade GP DX, and more. You can find them on Facebook here.

Dave & Busters Open In Ft. Myers, FL

The latest Dave & Busters to join the market can be found in Ft. Myers, FL, with 40,000 sq. ft. of gaming goodness to be had from them. This marks location #132 for D&B. Read more about it here.

Japan Update

Space Athletic“ Tondemi Kwana – A Bandai Namco owned facility that promises a “next generation” take on the Family Entertainment Center for Japan. IT doesn’t look like it will have much in the way of arcade games though

Asoverna on April 19th – This one also looks more focused on food and attractions than arcades.

Whew! That’s all for now. If you find yourself near any of these locations, be sure to stop by, buy some tokens or game cards and keep them going!

Newsbytes: Catwoman Edition For Batman Pinball; VR Zone Portal Leeds; Walter Day Book & More

It’s time for another newsbytes, bringing together several pieces of quick news from around the wonderful world’s of arcades & pinball. Where it is Memorial Day weekend in the US, a lot of people are out and about to begin their summer vacations, which means that for some arcades, they should be busy. If you are one of those people, then safe travels!

Stern Begins Making Batman ’66: Catwoman Edition

If you were wanting to see more of Julie Newmar’s Catwoman in Stern’s Batman ’66 pinball, then you are in luck as the company teased that a new Batman: Catwoman Edition is currently in production. I did reach out to Stern to see if there were any other details beyond this Facebook post (also asking about more pictures), but that is all that have to say about it for the moment.

Sega’s Next Arcade Release Is A “Big License”

We have no idea what that license will be yet, but come IAAPA 2019, we’ll get to play whatever it is. That could be OutRun 3 as teased way back (this November would have given that project about 24 months to brew, which is around average for game dev time in this business), or it could be something else entirely. Kevin Williams did point out else where that the Ferrari license for Out Run in the past was not exactly a cakewalk for Sega, but if it is OutRun 3 I imagine all of that will have been ironed out by the time the release rolls around. What do you think it is?

Oh, and speaking of Sega, they uploaded a new House of the Dead Scarlet Dawn promo to YouTube this week:

Bandai Namco Opening A VR Zone Portal in Leeds, UK

Thanks to Kieran May for this one. While I had heard about Bandai Namco opening their LBE VR experience in London, I was not aware of a second location in the UK found in Leeds. If you live in the area and have been wanting to see what Mario Kart VR is like, or check out the other unique experiences that they have there, then pay them a visit. They did have a location setup in Washington DC for a little while, but that just closed and they’ve been teasing that it will be popping up somewhere else in the US…we just have to wait and see where.

Dave & Busters Launches Their Next VR Experience: Men In Black: Galactic Getaway

Dave & Busters is keeping busy with their VR motion platform, which first launched with Jurassic World Expedition and most recently had begun featuring a Star Trek experience. Now they are gearing up for the new Men In Black movie, as you can see in this quick teaser:

New Walter Day Book On Kickstarter

If you’re here, then chances are that you are familiar with the name Walter Day. If not…I’d suggest checking out The King of Kong. Walter has been involved in creating special trading cards that highlight the many different “superstars” of classic video & arcade gaming. Now, a book is in development that digs into the details behind more of those superstars as well as stories about Mr. Day and his time as the referee of gaming. Check it out on Kickstarter!

Replacement Audio Chip For Certain Atari Arcade Games Launched

One of the troubles of maintaining classic arcade machines these days is getting a hold of replacement parts. For games that are around 40 years old, getting a hold of certain components is either very expensive and difficult, or downright impossible. Fortunately, there are fans or companies that are coming to the rescue with reproduction or drop-in replacement components. We recently mentioned the Alan-1 Flight Yoke for Atari Star Wars machines, and now there is another Atari part that is receiving the repro treatment with the Pokey One, by Hot Rod Arcade.

Pokey chips served as the audio generators for many of Atari’s titles in the early 80’s, including Centipede, Star Wars, Warlords, Crystal Castles, Liberator, & others. Often these games would use two or four Pokey’s in unison to offer more channels & sound effects. The chip was also used in Atari’s line of home computers and sometimes their game cartridges. Thanks to such widespread use, this new replacement should be welcome to anyone who has been dealing with a sound issue on their old machine. You can grab one for $40, here.

Software Update For Killer Queen Arcade

If you have a KQA cabinet, you may want to get this as it is more than just bug fixes:

Gunlord Lands On The Nintendo Switch

Ok, this isn’t exactly up-to-date news, but in case you missed it, NG:DevTeam has expanded their reach of original content from the Neo Geo MVS arcade & Dreamcast to now include the Nintendo Switch. Gunlord itself is a Turrican-like run’n gun platformer that NG Dev Team launched back in 2011, allowing arcades with a Neo Geo MVS cabinet to offer something very different from the norm of new games. A lot of people have been clamoring for the team to bring their stuff to more widespread platforms, so this is welcome news to anyone who was interested in playing this game but couldn’t come across it or couldn’t afford the cart.

IAAPA 1976 Transcripts Uploaded To The Web Archive

I had started doing a separate post on this, but time escaped me, so we’ll put it here – and at the bottom since it’s a little long-winded – instead.

Last week, IAAPA uploaded some “ancient” history in terms of video gaming to the Internet Archive, a full transcription of different events from the IAAPA 1976 seminars & conference. IAAPA just celebrated it’s 100th year last year, it being a giant amusement industry trade show that is kind of like the E3 of arcades.

The uploaded document can take a bit of time to read through, clocking in at 388 pages. It covers a wide variety of topics that span the industry, along with other things that were big at the time, like the bicentennial anniversary of the USA. Pg. 188 begins a very interesting discussion for those interested in arcade history; there, Jules Millman of Aladdin’s Castle began discussing the challenges that the company faced, which opens up a discussion afterwards between manufacturers, distributors and operators faced with tech support/maintenance, decor, what do to about games that stop earning like they used to, etc. Interesting that some things haven’t really changed at their core in how the business works.

Some pages before that did become the focus of a Vice article, where I got into a little tussle with the writer on Twitter. His piece mainly dealt with Atari’s Joe Keenan and his assertion that arcades in the future would feature virtual roller coasters or 8-player motion rides, the writer claiming that those things would “never come to fruition.” The writer argued on Twitter that because Atari themselves didn’t come out with that stuff, then he was completely wrong, and the vision of the future was essentially a silly one. I pointed out that the industry did in fact produce such games down the road, which is odd for “never.” There’s a little more to it as well, if you get into what Atari was up to that year (it wasn’t just Steve Jobs taking all of the credit for Breakout).

If you read all of Keenan’s speech(pg. 178-180), he doesn’t state that all machines would be giant motion theaters, it simply provides insight from himself and Nolan Bushnell that as early as 1976 (two years before Space Invaders would change everything and point the industry in a different direction), they were looking at ideas that eventually would come to light. Keenan spent a little time talking about the arrival of inexpensive CPUs, something that was a bit of a game changer for what they could do in games, since prior to that everything was using logic gates/TTL chips. They knew that there was a lot of potential in that development, and rightly concluded it would lead to bigger, more elaborate games.

Atari did launch a big projection screen EM game with Namco called F-1 in 1976 and they also had successfully launched 8-player games like Indy 800 and Tank 8. The latter was released a short time before the IAAPA’76 event and would have been on the trade show floor. Obviously, those titles would have been on his mind as to the future of gaming. Another thing the Vice article conveniently left out was Keenan mentioning the idea of 8-player racing games – something that would take longer to come to fruition that Bushnell/Keenan had hoped, but still happened by 1988 with Atari/Namco’s Final Lap. Every racing game released in modern times allows for multiple linked units, often up to eight and even big screen, motion seat models.

Is this a big deal overall? Nah, I’m not losing sleep over it. But if you’re going to play a “journalist” and mock history, at least bother to find out all of the context and research the aspects before deciding if it’s worth ridiculing. That and grow a thicker skin.

Now to end on something more light-hearted:

Have a great weekend everyone!

Dave & Busters Launches Men In Black: Galactic Getaway (Plus An Interview)

With summer time in full swing, that means movies, and there have been plenty to go out and watch lately. While arcades can’t see a game related to every film that comes along, Dave & Busters has certainly been able to squeeze more IP-related products to the market thanks to the Virtual Reality platform that they’ve been hosting at their locations since the release of the Jurassic World VR experience. That has included original takes on a dragon shooter, a Star Trek game, and now the new Men In Black film. Here’s the trailer, then I have some additional, exclusive info about the sound design for this one:

Designing the sound & More Game Details

Normally I’d keep the above for a Newsbytes post on the weekend(since the amount of interest we’ve seen from location-based VR has been somewhat minimal), but I was contacted by Chris Miller of Hexany Audio about this project and decided to give it a little more attention (as a note, this is not a paid ad).

We rarely get insight into the behind-the-scenes development of amusement titles, particularly sound efforts, so I find this part of it interesting. For their part in this, Hexany has handled all of the “music, sfx, vo, and technical audio implementation” for MiB: Galactic Getaway. They have worked on a number of home console games and done audio work for many other companies, assembling a pretty impressive portfolio of work.

They provided some more details and insight into the development of the game shown above with the text below. I asked if there were any sound samples to share, but you’ll have to go and play the game to hear what it’s all about. Otherwise, feel free to comment below or on the forums if you have some thoughts to share; this is also one of two VR LBE related posts that is going up today, so if out-of-home VR is your thing, then stay tuned.

Hexany Audio Discusses Creating Out of This World Sounds & Music For the New Men in Black: Galactic Getaway VR Experience

The Men in Black universe is expanding even more this month. Not only are fans of the Men in Black series able to experience a new chapter with Men in Black: International, but there is also a new virtual reality experience at Dave & Busters titled Men in Black: Galactic Getaway. The game, by VRstudios and development partner Strange Reptile, follows players as they chase down and apprehend a wacky crew of alien criminals who have stolen deadly jars of glowing green goo and insect parts (of the planet-destroying kind!) before they escape from Earth. Two wise-cracking aliens help guide the players every step of the way as they make their way through New York and London, wreaking havoc and causing lots of destruction, and finally to a showdown of epic proportions! With completely different endings, combined with other elements of variability including subtle differences in gameplay; randomized player characters; seven different randomly assigned weapons; and dialogue that responds real-time to your performance, Men in Black: Galactic Getaway is never the same experience twice.

Another aspect worth noting is the original audio for the game by Los Angeles based game audio studio, Hexany Audio. The team there was in charge of everything from the score to the sound effects and voice overs. So when you hear the chirp of the Noisy Cricket gun or the cars on the streets of New York, that was all them. To get a better idea of what goes into creating the sounds for a VR experience like this, the Hexany Audio team explains more precisely below.

-Danny Elfman’s themes for the Men in Black films are very orchestral, did you follow that approach with Men in Black: Galactic Getaway?

Matthew: Absolutely! I wanted to stay as close to the iconic sound of the franchise that Danny Elfman had already invented, so that means using the same wacky orchestra and synths everyone has come to know. Before writing my own score for Men in Black: Galactic Getaway, I actually took Danny’s main theme from the first movie and made a note for note transcription as a way to analyze the harmonic/melodic style as well as the orchestration and combinations of different synth effects. This allowed me to familiarize myself with this kind of writing and allowed me to write a bit more naturally.

-The game takes you many places including London and New York. Did your score change from city to city?

Matthew: Yes actually, the feeling of progression throughout the experience was one of the goals I had with the score. I wanted each of the new areas you encounter to feel fresh and exciting. I tried to accomplish this by changing key, tempo, musical ideas, and timbres as well as trying to give little periods of rest in-between the action.

-Two aliens act as guides for the players. Did you give these two aliens specific themes? If so, can you describe that?

Matthew: Because the experience is so short, I tried to keep the spread of themes to a minimum. Sticking mostly to the ostinato and melodies from the original main theme. Though there is a motif I sort of attributed to the character of Mother. A little choral stab idea on the upbeats. I tried to interject this idea throughout the whole London scene, though you can also hear it in the outro.

-Were there any obstacles you had to overcome with creating the score for this game?

Matthew: The biggest obstacle I think was trying to match the quality in the writing and production to the level of Danny Elfman’s work. He is such a masterful composer. Trying to get a lot of these fast string and wind runs to come through using all virtual instruments was a bit of a challenge, but I thought it came through in the end. It was actually super fun to write in this style and to try and get the virtual orchestra to sound as real as possible.

-Men in Black: Galactic Getaway is a game for multiple players. If it was for a single player would your scoring approach been any different?

Matthew: The multiplayer aspect is definitely taken into account, especially with this style of gameplay. We knew that with 4 people playing at the same time in a Dave & Buster’s Midway was going to be pretty noisy with people having a blast and talking loudly while playing. This means that the music needs to be very upbeat and active to have any chance at being heard well. Additionally, especially in a traditional game; if it’s single player, the approach is a lot more cinematic in nature as it’s more about guiding that single person through the story. In this experience, the main idea is fun, and we wanted the 4 players to have a blast fighting their way through the Men In Black universe.

-There are seven different randomly assigned weapons in the game. Was one more difficult than the others to create the sound for?

Richard: Jason Walsh was our Lead Sound Designer on the project so I’ll let him take this one! I’ll say that this was a great process working with VRstudios, Strange Reptile, and Dave & Buster’s to figure out how these weapons should sound and feel. Our studio Hexany Audio does a lot of weapon design for various games, but this was one instance where we got to challenge ourselves a bit further given the out-of-the-box nature of the weapons.

Jason: I think the one that everyone is most familiar with is the Noisy Cricket. The movie helps sell the power of the gun by having the characteristic sounds precede the actual gun shot. In the game, the sound is triggered when the player shoots, so I wanted to make sure the signature sci-fi cricket chirp was incorporated into the gun shot in a natural way. We ultimately had the chirp play as the ‘tail’ of the gun shot. I wanted it to flow naturally into the big explosion that the gun shot makes, so it took a few rounds of testing it in game to get the length and cadence to feel right.

-Did you all do the voice over work for the game too? If so, can you talk about what’s involved with that?

Jason: Hexany handled the voice over process for Men in Black: Galactic Getaway. We were given references for what each character should sound like and found voice actors and actresses that fit the bill. The clients made their casting decisions, and we recorded the final VO at our studio here in Los Angeles. After getting all the VO recorded, we experimented with some different vocal processing that we thought sounded like Men in Black and sent it back to the clients for their approval. The performances are seriously great. Hearing them processed into aliens makes it all the more entertaining.

-In the experience there are deadly jars of glowing green goo. Sound-wise, did you do anything to highlight this to make them more threatening?

Jason: Those jars are the pieces of Mother, the main enemy of the game. At the beginning of the game when the player sees Junior carrying the jars is also when the majority of the story is being given to the player through dialog. It’s one of those moments where we have to make sure we aren’t stepping on our own toes sound-wise. Luckily the back and forth dialog between the enemy characters cues the player in to everything they need to know about the jars and their mission.

-New York is filled with all sorts of random sounds, which city sounds did you emphasize for the New York scenes?

Jason: New York definitely has a lot going on. The ambiance has distant traffic, buzzing lights, idling engines of the cars on the street, steam, gusts of wind, and some different layers that fade between each other based on altitude. At the very beginning of the game the enemies detonate a stasis device that freezes all the people, so it’s like the whole city is on pause. We omitted a lot of the crowds and wallah that you may expect to hear in New York because of that.

-For people that aren’t familiar with VR projects like this, is there a director whom is giving you instructions on how he wants things to sound? What were your instructions for this game?

Jason: Kevin Bachus was the one overseeing the project from Dave & Buster’s along with Chanel Summers from VRstudios who was executive producing the project. They gave us a lot of freedom to be creative and build a unique sounding experience that still has a quirky sci-fi feeling like Men in Black. The game is a VR experience built for immersion as well as an arcade rail shooter, so we spent a significant amount of time polishing the mix to strike a balance between cinematic moments, dialog, and sound to give satisfying feedback to player’s actions.

END

Thanks again to Hexany for providing this info and insight to us. Have you had a chance to play this game yet? If so, what did you think?

Spotted on Location: ICE’s New Redemption Game ALL IN at Dave & Busters Buffalo in the Walden Galleria Mall, Cheektowaga NY

It’s always fun to find a new game on location, and thanks to the Dave & Busters arcade in the Walden Galleria Mall (Cheektowaga, NY), I have fun every time I stop by.  They are never lacking in showcasing a new game or two to test, and this time I found ALL IN by ICE. As of this writing, it is the only ALL IN machine in the world. So I guess I’m lucky too!

DSC06098

ALL IN is a skill-based redemption game where you pull a plunger and shoot a virtual puck down the a playfield. It’s a new twist on a beloved carnival classic. Depending on where the puck lands determines how many tickets you get. If you can aim the puck at the right spot, at the very end is a 1000 ticket jackpot. The playfield also raises up during play so you have to take that into consideration when aiming your shot. If you miss the shot you get 20 tickets. There are other larger amounts of tickets you can win if you hit the puck within those zones on the playfield. As the ALL IN name of the game suggests, you have to get the puck completely in the correct zone to win the larger amounts of tickets.

In this video I play the game, enjoy.

I don’t have any other information to share about ALL IN beyond this, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for any updates in the future!

It’s time for another Newsbytes, where the pieces of news are quick, but all related to arcades.

Dancerush Stardom Lands At Dave & Busters in San Diego

I saw a lot of chatter on Twitter about this, but was not able to get any additional information from Dave & Busters themselves after reaching out to them, so here’s the tweet that Toby passed along about it. Since the company isn’t confirming anything about it, I would venture to guess that this is just a test for now, not an indication that every location is about to get one.

(image below does have a profanity, as an alert)

DDR A20 Releasing On The 24th; Coming To All Cabinets?

Konami has announced that the 20th anniversary celebration software of Dance Dance Revolution, A20, will launch on the 24th (next Wednesday). I don’t believe there will be any difference as to how this is handled in distribution out West (nothing official, anyone interested has to get in on the special group-buys). That said, according to a claim on Aminoapps.com, A20 will also be available as a kit that is capable of working with previous DDR cabinets from DDR X (2008) on up; this includes any of the Betson-made cabinets with e-Amuse readers. This is the only source for this info though (I hadn’t heard of this , so we’ll have to wait and see.

Since we’re on the subject of rhythm games, check out this direct capture footage of a new title that launched in Japan this week by the name of WACCA. It’s kind of like seeing Sega’s MaiMai and Atari’s Tempest (well, more a bonus round from Tempest 2000) merging together:

California Extreme 2019 Reveals Speakers & Panel List

I won’t be headed to CAX this year unfortunately, but seeing stuff like this makes it really tempting to cancel the other plans (tempting, although I can’t). The organization behind the show has unveiled the speakers and panel list, which includes the guys behind Killer Queen Arcade and Cosmotrons discussing indie games & design; Steve Ritchie of pinball creation fame; Owen Rubin of Atari and Major Havoc fame and more.

Here’s a pic from one of the panels I attended last year, the CEO of Exa-Arcadia, Eric Chung and his discussion of the Japanese arcade market and why he was developing the Exa platform. I attended a few other panels and they were all fantastic. It’s just hard to peel yourself away from all of the gaming goodness that goes on there 😛

The Last Starfighter Turns 35

I should have mentioned this last Saturday, but didn’t realize that the anniversary had hit. On July 13th 1984, Universal released the cult classic film, The Last Starfighter to movie theaters. There were big hopes for it at the time, but it was ultimately a flop, which was one reason that caused Atari to cancel a couple of the related TLS games they had been working on (an arcade version which would have cost around $10,000 and a computer version).

There has been talk about a sequel and even a TV series based on TLS over the years, but it’s one of those concepts that’s been stuck in development hell (but, I imagine it will still happen one day; it’s not like there is much left that Hollywood hasn’t rebooted already and the dearth of creativity has led them to reboot the reboots a few times). Given how many reboots are handled, I can’t say that I would need to see this get such treatment; the original still holds up fine for me, as do most originals. Sure, I’d go for a remaster that replaces the original CGI with new age stuff, but there’s no need to replace the acting/story with something that wants to try and do it differently. I also have to throw out there that Gunstar is the coolest name for a space fighter craft ever devised (sorry Star Wars and Babylon 5). Here’s the one scene that sticks with most video game & arcade fans; what part of this movie is your favorite?

VR Pac-Man Challenge In Action

This one was mentioned previously on the blog, and now you can see the Oculus Quest powered Pac-Man Challenge in action. This is an official creation of Bandai Namco’s, but is currently only available at the Mazaria venue in Japan. It looks cool, although it does highlight one reason why I keep telling people that VR is not the replacement for arcade machines – you can’t exactly stuff this into a small corner of a restaurant or gas station (and it requires attendants) 😉

Happy Moon Landing Day! Let’s Talk About Moon-Themed Arcade Games

Today is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, so a few people are bringing up related arcade titles. Let’s do a quick dive into it (click here for epic space moon landing background music as you read :P) as we cover just a few of the moon-themed arcade games out there.

The one that primarily springs to mind is Atari’s first vector game, Lunar Lander. It gets the top spot since that game is precisely about landing on the moon, and was the first video game to do so. Granted, none of the Apollo astronauts had to navigate between sheer cliffs and jagged peaks, but this was one game that really captured both the difficulty and the excitement of the landings. I’m sure it would have done much better had it been released while the Apollo missions were still happening though; As a tough game, it didn’t do to well and Asteroids would pull the rug out from under it a short time afterwards. If you really want to get into the history of Lunar Lander(not just the Atari game, but lunar landing games in general), click here.

As video games weren’t really a thing during the Apollo days, there were a few electromechanical games that were created to capitalize on the Moon Fever: Chicago Coin’s Apollo Moon Shot, Moon Shot pinball (’69) and Apollo 14 (’70);  as well as Sega’s Lunar Rescue (’73) are some I can find with a quick search. Lunar Lander caused a few companies to respond with their own go-to-the-moon games, such as Taito’s Lunar Rescue and Nichibutsu’s Moon Shuttle (not about landing, but getting to the moon). And of course who can forget Irem’s fantastic Moon Patrol, which used the lunar rovers for inspiration?

There hasn’t been much else to point to in the area of moon games (where that’s the major theme) since the Golden Age, although we could make an exception for the indie made game Rashlander (2018); that game is coming to Steam next week in case you’ve not had the fortune of coming across it in the arcade. Which moon-themed arcade game is your favorite?

All right, that’s all I could find for this weekend. If you’re hitting up the beach, perhaps you can create your own Skee-ball sand castle!

Pinball FX2 Spotted On Test At Dave & Busters

$
0
0

[Thanks to Jdevy for the tip]

Well, it seems the news this season is all about the new game tests. I’ll throw out the reminder once again that what’s shown here may not release or may change significantly when it does. In this case, it’s a game we’ve seen almost three years ago and did appear to have been cancelled.

One aspect of Dave & Busters’ game make-up that they are known for is in NOT featuring pinball machines. But with the PinballFX2 virtual pinball platform, they might have found the solution that avoids the hassles of maintenance one gets with a mechanical game.

The case of Zen studios’ Pinball FX2 has been an odd one in terms of the arcade business. We first saw a commercialized version of the game back at IAAPA 2016, where the company was saying at the time that it was expected to launch in 2017 for both home and businesses. But 2017 came and went, and it seemed that the project lost steam. I’ve heard mentions of it still showing up at the occasional pinball event, but that’s it…until today.

A new design for the commercialized PinballFX2 machine has appeared on test at the Torrance, CA Dave & Busters. According to this thread on Reddit (and the picture below), it has been made as a redemption game where you choose from multiple tables and must beat a specific score to win the 1,000 ticket jackpot. The cabinet has changed a bit from what is seen in the video above, adding a bit more flash to the backbox area and at the base, where it appears to have an LED billboard that wraps around it for animations. You get 3 balls a play, although that can probably be adjusted in the operator menu (as it can with real pinball):

Whether or not this is another D&B exclusive, or it’s a harbinger of a mass-produced product, we’ll just have to wait and see. What do you think about it from the little known so far (or just the idea of a virtual pinball videmption game)?

Multimorphic P3 Pinball Units Appear At Dave & Busters

$

Disclaimer, this post is about an unannounced set of test units that were seen online at an unidentified Dave & Busters location. Any number of changes (as well as the outright cancellation of the games) can take place with them before release.

UPDATE! Multimorphic has officially announced the arrival of P3 at Dave & Busters. Scroll down for more.

A couple of weeks ago, we ran a story about the appearance of the PinballFX2 platform on test at a Dave & Busters location, and today we have another virtual pinball machine showing up at D&B to discuss.

UPDATE: Multimorphic has posted an official announcement of the machines spoken of below, stating that they are at the D&B in Austin, TX, feature a really cool new lighting system (more of this on other pinball machines please!) and providing the video here:

There is no guarantee that this will appear at all Dave & Busters locations, but I imagine that if you really want to see pinball at your local D&B, ask them if they’ll add P3 as well.

Original Post: Thanks to JDevy to pointing this out to me, a picture shared on the Reddit website that shows a pair of Multimorphic P3 Pinball machines at an unknown D&B location. The pic came like this and is blurry, although I did work on it to enhance it as best as I could. Per Jdevy, this costs 9.9 points to play (sounds a bit high, but I’m not adept on tracking D&Bs prices) and it does not feature tickets, which makes it different from Pinball FX2:

Now this is not the first time that we’ve heard about the P3 pinball platform, although I have not heard about any locations hosting one until now. Generally I’ve seen it in photos at pinball conventions, but it’s probable that some locations out there have one or more setup for play.

As a quick crash course if this all sounds new to you, P3 Pinball was designed as a cross between mechanical and virtual pinball tables, providing a modular setup that allows easy swap outs of the upper portion of the game to convert the table over to something new. Here’s a trailer:

For the game that is seen here, it is a title that is not available to the public yet, per the official game page on the P3 website. It’s called Heads Up and is a networked connected game where players can “challenge opponents anywhere across the world in a heads-up pinball showdown” or against a linked machine in the same room. Also per the website:

Heads Up! creates a shared playfield across two connected machines, presenting the exact same targets to both players. Shoot green gem shots, and you score points. Shoot red portal shots, and your ball goes to your opponent, allowing them to rack up more points. It’s simple in concept but layered in strategic complexity.

It does sound like an interesting and unique concept(for the competitive internet play; locally linked pinball machines has been done before, but for whatever reason is a rarity), bolstered further by the mixed & modular platform. It’s also noteworthy that D&B is listening to complaints about pinball, but seems to be finding ways to get around the maintenance problems that are inherent with the game.

We’ll keep our eyes and ears open for more info on this one – what do you think about this as well as Dave & Busters’ apparent move towards possibly providing some non-traditional pinball options at their locations?

It’s the first weekend of September, and that means that it’s time for another edition of Newsbytes. This is where I curate arcade & pinball news from around the interwebs into one post.

Right before we get to that, note that I am going to try and begin issuing a monthly newsletter. You can sign up for it using the field to the right, somewhere around here ->

On to the bytes of news!

Tokyo Joypolis Opens Scarlet Dawn: The Attraction

The Super Deluxe version of the latest House of the Dead has been available on the market since 2018, and now if you want to take the next step, there’s the Special Attraction version, only at the Tokyo Joypolis (of course, you’ll already have to be in Japan to use this, since travel is still restricted into the country). It’s not clear from this very brief trailer if the content of the game is any different from the arcade version, but you do get a motion seat, bigger screen and more players. Joypolis also uploaded brief videos of their Murder Lodge attraction and D-Lounge.

Sega Astro City Mini Trailer

If you’re hyped up for the miniature Sega Astro City cab, then you’ve probably seen this already. If not, here’s the full, amusing trailer that covers all of the titles that this will come with. Just note that it’s in Japanese, aside from the occasional English that the announcer throws in there for fun.  I’ll still hold out a glimmer of hope that Sega will try and do a full-sized, coin-op version of this (with a few more games), but just a glimmer:

Dave & Busters Restores Konami’s E-Amuse Service

In the aftermath of the pandemic, Dave & Busters’ social media (particularly their Twitter account) has become much more active and customer oriented. In addition to placing a much stronger focus on rhythm games, they recently asked customers to respond with retweets regarding Konami’s e-Amuse service (the online services for games like DDR). Customers did, and now they’ve brought the service back. I have seen some online ask “Why was it removed in the first place?” and while I haven’t spoke with anyone at D&B about that, I think the answer is pretty easy – money. E-Amuse isn’t a free service, and if people aren’t actually using the service, the question becomes for the company “Why should we pay for this?” Granted, I imagine that if players don’t live up to their online enthusiasm then it could be pulled again, so if you want it to stay, use the feature!

Sort of along those lines, here’s a new ad campaign from the company where they are playing up the “Ding! Ding! Ding!” aspect of winning on the midway

Hook Pinball Gets Color

From ColorDMD of course:

Speaking of pinball, if you want to go super in-depth on Stern’s latest Avengers creation, This Week In Pinball has got you covered.

Success Releases Umihara Kawase Fresh AC

Most of the Japanese game releases we’ve focused on this year have come from Exa-Arcadia, but there are other game distribution platforms in the country. One of those is Sega’s All.Net+ Multi 3 (also abbreviated as APM3). Their service isn’t packed with games, but they are looking to do something about that now with releases like Rolling Gunner and now a platformer that you can see below. I wouldn’t expect this one to hit North American or EU shores though, as Sega’s service isn’t available anywhere outside of Japan (as far as I know).

Strania EX Limited Edition Units Arrive

Way back around the end of 2018/beginning of 2019, Exa-Arcadia announced a special edition of their Exa boards that would be branded with G.Rev’s Strania EX on it, and come with some other nice goodies. Pre-orders were available on their website for a while, but news about it had been sparse until recently. Now, people who ordered have been receiving the units, at least per this tweet. I wonder if any locations out there grabbed this particular model, or if it’s going more to collectors?

Atari Historian Curt Vendel Passes Away

A pillar of the classic gaming community unexpectedly passed away this week, a man by the name of Curt Vendel. He was a co-author on a book I reviewed some years ago called Atari Inc. : Business Is Fun, but more than that he was instrumental in the preservation of large amounts of Atari’s history both in arcades and on the home side. For years his website, Atarimuseum.com, has been a great resource for many of those items. I did communicate with him a few times, including once when I sent him a design idea for a new-age Atari 5200 controller without him asking for it 😛 (he was always very gracious; for that particular design he said that he had come up with something very similar for a project he had been planning, but never came to light). I offer my sincere condolences to his family and friends (a Gofundme has been set up for his daughter’s education) …RIP.

So About Mario Kart Live…

If you’re an arcade nerd like myself, you might have noticed something quite interesting during the latest Mini-Direct from Nintendo this week. It was all focused on celebrating 35 years of Mario, announcing new games in the franchise, and one of those included a pretty cool augmented (or would this be Mixed?) reality version of Mario Kart called Mario Kart Live. I bring this up as this kind of hearkens back to an idea that Sega did way back in 1988 called Sega Super Circuit. In that concept, you didn’t have RC cars at home, but Sega constructed a gigantic race track, fitted some RC cars with cameras, and those were linked to some sit down arcade cabinets where you saw the view from the car on the screen. It was really cool, and I think it counts as the largest arcade machine ever made, but few know about it as I don’t believe more than one was ever built. They weren’t alone in that; another company called OWatch released their modern take on this last year. Granted, Nintendo’s home solution is a little different, but I couldn’t help but notice some of the similarities on another concept that got it’s start in arcades first 😉

Thanks to Kevin Williams for pointing out the Owatch (or is it Stekia Amusements?) AR Racing concept – I hadn’t heard of it until now, so here’s what it looks like (I have been thinking of doing my own kind of AR Racing attraction at the arcade as I’ve long been fascinated by Sega’s take on it, but have been sidetracked by other endeavors. Only thing to me that looks like a little bit of overkill for Owatch’s part is the motion base):

Location #2?

Some of you may have seen some of my chatter on social media this week regarding a second location for my arcade. For those that don’t know, I operate an arcade in West Valley City, UT, and have been doing so since the summer of ’08. It probably sounds crazy to be talking about expanding operations during a wild and often disheartening year such as this, but I have good reasons for doing so.

The main thrust behind this is creating a back-up plan. Things have been fairly terrible for my arcade since a large multi-million dollar FEC opened up just down the hall from my location this past November. Combine that with the pandemic effects – a month and a half shut down, business down massively, frequent customers confusing me for the bowling alley arcade, and the prospect that the JC Penny just a few doors down potentially closing for good has me considering other options.

The first option was in southern Idaho, when a landlord there contacted me about potentially opening a place. It was a really nice location and town, but my family just wasn’t ready to move states at the moment. I did consider operating two locations with it being the second, but the distance just would have made things too much of a headache. That said, the idea of two locations had it’s appeal, so I decided to look into it a bit more.

After a short search, I found a great place (I won’t say where just yet as I haven’t signed a contract right now) where the ball has been rolling quite well so far, but we’ll see how things go once I get the keys and have to start spending money on fixing the spot up and hiring help. I do have some new games lined up for the space – I came across an amazing package deal with some newer but used Sega games so will move on that(a Scarlet Dawn, Luigi’s Mansion & 2x Daytona Championship USAs); I also may be grabbing some Namco titles such as Nirin and Razing Storm from a distributor that has them used to further boost my offerings. While I will be taking some games from my present location to help fill the space up, I don’t want to harm my functioning operation either.

Here’s a little tease – it was a clothing store, so my work will be cut out for arcadifying it

Hopefully the endeavor works out to where I do fine with both locations, meaning that I can employ some more people and expand my influence. It is a little bit of a daunting thought as I’ve never done anything like this before, but I’d never owned and run a business prior to all this either. We’ll see how it goes!

Arcade news is starting to tick up once again, but I have been sidetracked on covering all of it as I’ve been working on getting my second arcade location ready to open by October 1st. Along those lines, it looks like there are enough new location stories to warrant another Location Watch post, so stay tuned for that this next week. 😉

Now onto the quick bytes of news!

Jurassic Park Mini Coming Soon?

It seems that the story the other day about a new home version of Jurassic Park has been generating some buzz, and Raw Thrills has responded to growing operator requests. Straight from the top:

“There is misleading information about a new mini Jurassic Park arcade game. In response to numerous operator request, Raw Thrills is investigating the possibility of creating a mini Jurassic Park Arcade video game for smaller locations. Due to the preliminary state of this effort no further information can be released at this time.” – Eugene Jarvis, President of Raw Thrills

I’ll let you know more once there is more to know, but I think that this is a welcome possibility!

Pre-Orders Open For Psyvariar Delta AC

I had a post partially complete to focus just on this, but it was a victim of my limited time. Fans of Success’ Psyvariar are in luck, as the latest version of the game is now available to pre-order for arcades. Psyvariar Delta AC is exclusively available on the exA-Arcadia platform and can be nabbed just as a cart for around $1250 USD. Per the page, here’s what it’s all about:

PSYVARIAR DELTA AC brings back the classic series to the HD age! Combining all of the ships, stages and pulse pounding techno music from past installments, Medium Unit and Revision as well as the all new Delta stages and newly composed tracks by master WASi303. Supporting both horizontal and vertical modes, extra informational gadgets have been added to the game for players to achieve even higher scores. Easy enough for beginners but difficult enough for the best pilots.

It is also worth noting that the test for DoDonPachi Saidaioujou (often abbreviated as SDOJ) has been a success by what I’ve been told; the first day saw people wait in line for quite a while and some had to come back the next day to get a chance to play. It seems safe to say that SDOJ will do extremely well in Japan…should be interesting to see how it does overseas too. They have also been asking those who played the game for their input. In my neck of the woods, I have at least two people asking for it…

Arcade 1up Version Of Big Buck Hunter Now Available For Pre-Order

If you have wanted to have a Big Buck Hunter arcade machine in your home, but didn’t want to shell out the $5000~6000 for the offline home version, then you are in luck, as the Arcade 1up version of the game is now available for pre-order. The unit comes with 4 versions of Big Buck Hunter – Pro, Pro Open Season, Safari, and Safari Outback. These are all a little different from the version that is currently gracing open arcades and bars (Reloaded), but I’m sure there are plenty of arcade fans out there that would be happy to have this around.

Oh and speaking of Raw Thrills, they now have an “official fan newsletter” that you can subscribe to if you wish.

NEOGEO MVSX Pre-Orders Open

Last but not least from the available pre-orders out there is the NEOGEO MVSX. This was previously mentioned on the blog and begins shipping in November.

Sword of Rage Discontinued

Alas, not all games get made forever, and such is the case with Steve Ritchie’s return to the Black Knight saga, Sword of Rage. As Stern Pinball posted earlier this week, now is your last chance to nab one brand new if you’ve had the itch for it:

In other pinball news, Jersey Jack Pinball will unveil their next game next month (rumor still holds that it’s a new Guns ‘N Roses) and deeproot Pinball will be making some kind of announcement on Monday. It would be nice to see the latter reveal something more than animation teases and show an actual game for a change; Rumors are also swirling that they have picked up Heighway Pinball’s failed Aliens, but that might be wishful thinking. We’ll find out soon!

Inconsistent Gov. Pandemic Policy Continues Damaging Our Industry

Thanks to Greg Bacorn for sending this story my way, where the owner of Bounce Magic in New York state has had to permanently shutter one of their locations and is still unable to operate their second, while similar businesses are allowed to operate in the state. It sounds to me like they need to be taking similar action that was done in Massachusettes and sue the governor over the arbitrary and inconsistent orders.

Or maybe the owners could protest by playing pinball at the NY state capital…whatever works, I guess!

The latest version of Sega’s MaiMai is out in Japan…here is some footage for anyone interested:

Dave & Busters Inching Closer To Bankruptcy

While the news coming out of the business world regarding Dave & Busters wasn’t positive this week, the company certainly is not going down without a fight. I’ve never seen their social media marketing machine this energized, as they have really been engaging with their customers and going to town on quick new videos on YouTube. I believe that most of their locations have reopened, but there are some places where they still can’t operate. We’ll see if they dodge the bullet or not, but until then, they are temporarily downsizing in an effort to stay afloat.

Along those lines, some waves were made this week when Chuck E. Cheeses asked a court to be able to destroy 7 billion redemption tickets that they have in-hand, to avoid people from getting their hands on any un-won surplus that could be used to get prizes.

For some happy arcade location news, check out this interview that Eurogamer did with Arcade Club’s Andy Palmer.

That’s all I could find for this weekend – I did hope to have a full playthrough of Aliens Armageddon uploaded to my channel, but the shiny new capture device doesn’t like it. I tried capturing the game with various different settings and no luck – the graphics look fine on the game screen and in my capture program, but when I finish recording, everything becomes a pixellated mess every 7-8 seconds. It might be my laptop, which is getting older by the day, but I will also try out a different game and see what happens.

To that end, let’s finish with an image of a brand new out-of-home VR concept that just doesn’t care about making users look really goofy:

Image

For now, enjoy your weekend and if there is an arcade open near you, be sure to help them out!

VRSenal Launches Vader Immortal Lightsaber Dojo VR At Dave & Busters

There have been a lot of companies jumping into the VR pool over the past several years, and while some we only heard about once, others were able to thrive. One of those latter companies is VRSenal, which initially launched with its own licensed hardware adaptation of the popular Beat Saber game. The first time I came across them was in 2018 when they went to IAAPA with Beat Saber, Fruit Ninja, and a never-released version of Predator.

Unfortunately, the license for all commercial public/location-based entertainment use of Beat Saber was recently revoked by Facebook, which impacts future sales of ‘arcadified’ Beat Saber games. Fortunately, VRSenal had something else in the works, and that is now officially available on the market.

Also a licensed game, this one comes from the Star Wars universe and is known as Darth Vader Lightsaber Dojo VR.  This version is derived from Vader Immortal: A Star Wars VR Series, but as I was told by Kevin Bachus of Dave & Busters, it is “…an entirely new product built specifically for arcades. The HMD is the Vive Pro and we did test it earlier this year during which we were very pleased by its performance.” Some D&B fans had been discussing the arrival of units at certain D&B locations this past week, and the other day, the company posted this trailer to their YouTube channel:

I did some digging and was able to get a little more information on this, including the sales sheet. Also, here’s a cabinet shot:

Vader Immortal Lightsaber Dojo by ILM / VRsenal

Per the specs, this game packs some of the most serious gaming hardware we’ve seen in an arcade machine, using an unspecified nVidia RTX graphics card to power the experience. This means raytracing in VR, with the real-time raytracing technique being extremely rare to find in arcade titles (the only one I’ve heard of is Tecmo’s Dead or Alive 6 AC, which did it in software). It also uses an HTC Vive Pro headset, and features a 75″ 4K TV display so on-lookers can watch the action.

While the game has launched at Dave & Busters, I’ve verified that it is available for other locations to pick up through distribution, if they are open and can float the cost. I was not told the cost, but I imagine it’s in the same range as Beat Saber was (approx. $40k). I know that Beat Saber was doing really well pre-pandemic though, so perhaps this is the kind of game that could help bring people back. What do you think about it?

Taito’s Densha De Go!! Spotted On Test At Dave & Busters

It’s been a little bit since we had news regarding a game on location test, particularly something that was introduced at Dave & Busters. As you can recognize from the title, this one is from Taito, being their oddly compelling train simulation game, Densha De Go!!.

If you are unfamiliar with the series, it’s one of those games from the late 90’s that has mainly stuck to Japan outside of the occasional grey export. Taito did recently develop a new version, which appeared out West when Taito brought along some games to fill out their IAAPA 2019 booth. I got to play it and while it wasn’t in English, thanks to the help of a guide I had fun with it:

The machine on test comes in a different cabinet design than seen above, something that Taito introduced in 2019 as a way to get the game into more locations. The news was shared on the Dave & Busters Reddit forum, where it was also shown to have an English translation and online Nesica support. Here’s an official trailer of it in Japanese:

While certainly not as action-packed as your typical arcade game, something about this is rather compelling and it’s a fun game to play as mentioned.

To get more accurate info about the test, I reached out to Kevin Bachus of Dave & Busters to get the official word and found out the following:

  • Taito did not initiate this test as one of the comments asserts
  • D&B paid for the English translation
  • This is a lone unit on test; More depends on how this does
  • Expectations on this are in line with the current pandemic situation
  • Taito is not exiting the arcade business [as I had personally heard about recently]

We’ll have to wait and see for more, but what do you think – excited at the possibility for this one or no?

ArcadeHeroes.com Location Watch banner

Welcome to Location Watch, a post series that highlights brand new arcade locations that have opened their doors for the first time. Since news in this regard has been rather slow, we haven’t had them taking place monthly like in the past, but where we’ve gone about 3 months since the last one, some location openings have taken place since that are better to mention before too much time passes.

There are a couple of interesting trends I’m seeing with the sites being discussed today: 1) bar/arcades are still a thing, despite the damage done by the pandemic 2) We’ve got a lot more international locations to talk about than we usually do, which indicates more entertainment investment and growth outside of the US. Granted, a lot of locations had the investments made before the pandemic up-ended everything, with plenty of businesses taking a wait-and-see approach for when things would be okay to open. As numbers continue to go down in most places, I think we may see some location growth again, but it will depend on the region.

Please note that this post is highlighting brand new arcade businesses to open their doors, not ones that had opened prior to lockdowns and are re-opening again.

Area 15 (Las Vegas, NV)

Las Vegas is no stranger to places calling themselves “Area 51,” so it looks like this new mega-FEC decided to turn that on its head by calling itself Area 15. Billed as “a wonderous mash-up of experiences” and an “immersive playground,” while this is certainly in the class of FEC, they blur that line into amusement park territory given all of the experiences that they pack together. Fortunately, they do include a proper arcade inside of their Emporium section – which operates with its own website. Interesting to note that it says that the arcade section opened up today.

Since it’s a bar/arcade you have to be over 21 to enter, but if you do you can expect to find: Addams Family pinball; Deadpool pinball; Donkey Kong; Double Dragon; Galaga; Joust; Killer Queen Arcade; Metallica pinball; Mortal Kombat; Ms. Pac-Man; NARC; NBA Jam; Pac-Man Battle Royale; Robotron; Street Fighter II; Theatre of Magic pinball; TMNT: Turtles In Time; Twilight Zone pinball; X-Men 4p, and more. Find their main website here.

Emporium Arcade Bar Las Vegas

PINS / 16-Bit Bar & Arcade (Easton, OH)

For another bar/arcade that opened its doors today, we hop over to Ohio for the 16-Bit Bar & Arcade. This is another massive facility, boasting 38,000 sq. ft. of space, although much of that is taken up by dining/patio spaces and not games. Still, they have plenty of room to grow their selection for when they need it. The Easton location marks the companies’ 7th venue, where they have “40 arcade games, 35 pinball machines” spread throughout the facility to play. I couldn’t find a mention of what the video games are, but for pinball, they do have a list, where it includes older games like High Roller, No Good Gofers, and Playboy, to several of Stern’s latest titles like Avengers and Led Zeppelin. They also have some uncommon non-Stern games like Spooky’s Alice Cooper and American’s Houdini. Find the Easton website here.

Game Terminal (Nashville, TN)

Taking a step back to last November, Game Terminal is a huge, 10,000 sq. ft. bar/arcade that isn’t holding itself to just retro games (as many bar/arcades do). Apart from the extensive dining options they have (both indoor and outdoor), the arcade area packs a big punch with games like: Area 51; Burgertime; Cruis’n USA & Blast; Defender; Galaga; Frogger; Joust I & II; Lucky & Wild; Major Havoc; Marble Madness; Mortal Kombat II & 3; NFL Blitz; Popeye; Q*Bert; Rambo; Reactor; Space Invaders, Star Wars & Return of the Jedi (both Atari); and many, many more. Some of them are quite rare, such as Bubbles in a Duramold cabinet, Atari’s I, Robot, Robby Roto, and several others. They also have a huge collection of pinball machines, from the latest Stern titles like Avengers: Infinity Quest & TMNT as well as Jersey Jack’s new Guns ‘N Roses and American Pinball’s Hot Wheels. They also have plenty of classics to enjoy, including The Addams Family, Elvis, Funhouse, Space Invaders, and a ton of others. The main website is here; The Nashville Guru also did a nice spread on them.

Natsuge Musueum at Baba Mikado

This arcade museum opened up at the Mikado Arcade in Tokyo at the end of last November, but not many people have had a chance to check them out after emergency orders closed arcades again. Natsuge did have a museum in Akihabara previously but that closed down, so they’ve moved to Mikado, combining forces to survive. By my understanding of Mikado’s tweets, they are open in a limited capacity right now, following government-mandated guidelines.

Natsuge Museum

The Oasis (Christchurch, NZ)

This one is partially open at the moment, where the company is operating a Hologate system as a “pop-up VR” experience while development takes place on their larger venue which will include “mini-golf and an arcade.” InterGame doesn’t mention how large the space nor the arcade will be, but if they have a HoloGate I imagine it will be something significant for when they do open. You can stay on top of their progress/news via their Facebook page.

TAG e-Karting (Sainte-Thérèse, QC, Canada)

H/T to InterGame for mentioning this one. While I have not found an opening date for this kart racing facility yet, it looks like it’ll be pretty sweet, something that is along the lines of Andretti’s here in the states. Their arcades page mentions that they will have “more than 30 arcade machines spread out on 2 floors,” with those falling into racers, shooters, sports, and classic games. My guess is that classic games might come more from World’s Largest Pac-Man/Space Invaders Frenzy/maybe Pac-Man’s Pixel Bash. From that page, they are promising the likes of Cruis’n Blast, Jurassic Park, Pac-Man Battle Royale, Super Bikes 3, and the Typhoon 10th Anniversary.

Dave & Busters Debuts Minecraft Dungeons Arcade At All Locations

$

0

Not long after Chuck E. Cheeses announced their bankruptcy last year, things were looking pretty dicey for the other giant arcade chain in the US, Dave & Busters. Fortunately, they were able to navigate the lockdowns in a way that kept them from following the same bankruptcy route, and as was recently reported, they have a big summer comeback planned, with several new games making their debut at their stores. The first in that wave is the new Minecraft Dungeons Arcade by Raw Thrills/Play Mechanix.

I first heard about them starting to show up a couple of weeks ago, when one of my regulars posted a pic of the game off at the Salt Lake City location. Given that SLC isn’t exactly a major D&B hub, I wondered what that might mean for all locations; Then this weekend, The popular channel The Arcade Couple posted the first footage of the game in action:

Judging by that, the game does play differently from the console version, so I think it’s pretty safe to call this an arcade exclusive build. Here the game plays more like a beat ’em up like Golden Axe, with the camera stopping in areas for you to do your hacking/slashing/shooting before moving on; Then of course there’s the card aspect of it all. I did briefly speak with Raw Thrills this weekend and asked them about the game, as it has been technically on test for the past little bit, where they said it was doing “phenomenal” so far.

After seeing the video above though, I reached out to Kevin Bachus of Dave & Busters and confirmed that the game has rolled out to “all locations,” which indicates the game’s debut to the market. Where I already have gone through the process of leasing one, earliest I’ve been told that my unit is shipping is “end of June,” so that would indicate a limited time exclusive for D&B. They also are getting a slightly different model – Kevin confirmed that they are all coming with a 75″ monitor, while other available units will ship with a 65″ model.

As it is, I’ve moved this game to the release column of our 2021 game tracking page; I will also have an unboxing and direct capture footage of it as soon as I get my hands on it, but as mentioned, it’ll still be about a month before I can do that. What do you think about this from the footage above?

Newsbytes: The Site Is Back; MaxiTune 6RR Release Date; New Games For Asia; D&B Update & More

Greetings and welcome to Arcade Heroes. This Newsbytes post is made to catch us up on some arcade news from around the world, but due to some backend issues with the website here, I’ve fallen behind. Let me address that really quick:

We’re Back!

Apologies for the recent site errors and downtime – I’ve had to upgrade some things to ensure that this doesn’t happen again, but there were some obstacles in that regard, some of which came from some not-so-helpful customer service from my registrar. Fortunately, that is all passed and now the site should be running without a hitch for the foreseeable future – although that said, I have come across posts where images aren’t showing up despite showing up in the media server, so I’m not sure what that’s about. Either way, thanks for sticking with us!

Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune 6RR Release Date (And Maximum Tune 5DX+ Updates)

Let’s get back into the rush of things with some news on Bandai Namco Amusements’ Wangan Midnight Maximum Tune series (just known as Maximum Tune here in North America). First, a release date has been announced for the latest build of the game, 6RR, which is set to launch on December 22nd. Note that outside of imports, this is intended just for Japan/Asia/Oceania sales territories and not North America.

For North America, we’re looking at Maximum Tune 5DX+’s launch, which has been previously discussed on the site. While this hasn’t been given an exact release date yet, I’ve placed my order for an upgrade kit, and here’s what my distributor told me (paraphrasing): “The kits are just boxes which will include the artwork and other materials needed to upgrade. You’ll likely be getting the kits on the week of the 19th, but Namco said that the kits will not be activated until the first week of January. We’ll keep you posted.”

This activation deals with the online nature of the game, so it looks like BNA is wanting to get the kits out to the various interested buyers, then once they have them in hand, will activate the game on a certain day. If that changes or more concrete launch date details come along, I’ll be sure to let everyone know.

Taito Releases Tetote x Connect In Japan

H/T to Kieran May for the tip. It’s not been a secret that the arcade business in Japan has been in dire straights for the past two years now, with various manufacturers pausing their developments or outright canceling them and closing up their arcade divisions. It seemed like Taito might be in the latter boat, but surprisingly they launched a new rhythm game back on the 1st by the name of Tetote x Connect.

First revealed at the JAEPO 2020 show, this game would have you dancing with a virtual idol to different J-Pop songs. Originally they were promoting one of those idols to be the popular Hatsune Miku, but she is absent (I think, I’m not an expert on the character and her different appearances 😛 Feel free to correct me if she’s the pink/blue-haired gal below) in the most recent promo trailer:

Speaking of rhythm games, Konami’s Dancerush Stardom has been cloned. This Yuto Games company has been promoting a ton of new games all over certain social media channels as of late and has either cloned or purchased the old InJoy Motion catalog.

Wahlap Posts A Video of Crazy Rafting

Also on the subject of China, Wahlap has been in the news some lately with their Asia release of Asphalt 9 Legends, but at a recent tradeshow, they also promoted a new rafting game by the name of Crazy Rafting. This takes the idea of Namco’s old Rapid River and presents it in a more modern engine, while also throwing dinosaurs into the mix, where something like a T-Rex can snatch you and you have to use the paddles to shake it off. This wasn’t at IAAPA so I’m not sure if we’ll ever see it here.

Twin Tiger Shark Released

First mentioned back in January of this year, the love letter to the old Toaplan arcade shooters of ages past is now shipping out to customers. This plugs into an existing JAMMA arcade cabinet, where you can enjoy it in all of its STG glory. I’ve seen a few backers post about receiving theirs; Not sure if you can order one apart from having backed it. If you have one, what do you think about it?

Incredible Technologies Promotes Arcade Collection

It wasn’t at IAAPA, but IT has recently posted a video to show off their upcoming Arcade Collection game, giving us a more complete look at a piece that was only teased about previously. Designed as a kit, if you have an IT Showcase cabinet (which has been the cabinet that they’ve sold most of their games in for the past 14 years or so), then seems to me that this one is a no-brainer. An extra bonus is that they’ve remastered the graphics for more modern monitors. Check it out below; Game page is here.

Things Are Going Well Over At Dave & Busters

One nice thing about an arcade company being public is that they publish status reports for investors to look at. This helps us know exactly how things are going, and in a spot of positive news, things are going pretty well for Dave & Busters as of late, according to their 3rd quarter financial report.

If you don’t want to go over that, Jdevy posted a summary on Discord:

  • New stores & store renovations are in the works, although they may be closing one underperforming location.
  • They are grabbing a Transformers VR piece. I only know of one, which was the Transformers: Battle Arena by Meta4 Interactive, seen at IAAPA (I haven’t published a video of that yet, but will likely post soon)
  • They will be doing a Summer of Games promo in 2022 once again. What those games will be have not been revealed by the company yet.

For one negative thing, it does appear that the inflation that’s been affecting pretty much everything lately (took my family out to eat last week and I was floored by how much the bill cost – was twice what it was in the past) is also affecting them and game prices, per users on the Dave & Busters Reddit forum. To be fair, I imagine that ops and arcade chains everywhere are raising prices, so I doubt it’s just D&B. I haven’t heard of what anyone else is doing though, apart from this (Thanks to liamc for the link)

How A Blind Gamer Plays Games

H/T to Kieran May for the link.

In the past, I posted a Facebook post from one of our loyal readers, Aaron Danvers-Jukes, who described his journey into arcade gaming even though he is blind. I’ve heard stories of other gamers who love to play games even though they cannot see them, and here’s a video showing one Michael Espinoza and how he manages to enjoy fighting games despite being unable to see them. I put the link above just in case it doesn’t embed for you below.

What’s The Worst Arcade Game You’ve Put A Coin Into?

While arcades usually avoid having truly bad games show up – they tend to be rigorously tested and have to show that they can earn before being produced – there are still some that have slipped through the cracks. There are a few terrible games in the 70s (although some you cannot rely on emulation/simulation to properly reproduce and you can only experience them on an original cabinet), but even in the beloved 80s and 90s there were some bad ones made. Here, YouTuber John Hancock goes over 5 titles he finds as bad, but of course this sort of thing varies. For me, one game that I really couldn’t stand, even after giving it a few chances, was Data East’s Mutant Fighter.

What are the worst arcade games you’ve played (old or new), in your opinion?

I can’t recall if I mentioned it, but ShouTime had mentioned at IAAPA that the latest game updates now had all of their games running at incredibly low input lag, making it so that it’s about as good as you can get without using a CRT. Axel City 2 will launch next year:

It’s been bit since we’ve heard anything about Bandai Namco Amusements’ Pac-Man Battle Royale Chompionship, so let me share a couple of quick items about it. These should interest operators looking to get one as well as players hoping to experience it.

When first shown off at IAAPA 2021(see below), the release date was tentatively scheduled for February of this year, but that was soon pushed back to April; then May. At present, let me quote Frank Cosentino of BNA: “The standard will start shipping mid June. Supply chain issues are nuts. “

Sadly with major population centers of China under massive lockdowns recently, those production issues where many arcade manufacturers get their parts from, are not going to get better any time soon.

The plan is to offer the standard 4p model as originally shown, along with an upgrade kit that will also turn an existing PMBR unit into a Chompionship that supports up to 8-players. Here’s a newer & nicer cabinet image of that cabinet that Namco recently posted to their website:

Now you might be asking yourself a question from that statement “Standard? Does that mean that there is a deluxe?”

Well astute reader, I’m glad you asked as the answer is: yes. And those DX units have already begun shipping, but there’s a caveat to it. Here’s an image that reader Jdevy caught that isn’t the best, but it’s the first time I’ve seen the DX out in the wild; I did see a pre-production photo of it at AEI but it wasn’t ready quite yet:

Pac-Man Battle Royale Chompionship DX at Dave & BustersWhat you see here is the DX version of the game, which offers 8-player action on a cabinet that is essentially like an air hockey table.  The screen size is around 75″-80″ but it also has two marquee screens to show the same action for onlookers. This is a Dave & Busters summer exclusive, after which other locations will be able to nab one. In the meantime, the standard should begin shipping as mentioned in June.
